Types of Braces

1. Conventional Metal Braces

Modern metal braces are much smaller and more comfortable than before. Its small size allows for greater patient comfort and better oral hygiene!

They are the most common type of braces used for kids and teens, but they’re also an option for adults, particularly for those who are budget-conscious.

2. Self-ligating Braces

Conventional braces use O-rings (rubber rings) to tie orthodontic wire to brackets to generate teeth movement. The system has its pros and cons. The main downsides of O-rings are high friction, plaque retentive, discolouration, rubber deterioration and breakages. However, self-ligating braces use trap doors or clips to hold orthodontic wire in place. The self-ligating system minimises or eliminates the side effects, which makes orthodontic treatment more effective and efficient. Our centre has developed a “versatile ligation protocol” on the most advanced self-ligating braces: Damon Ultima. The protocol takes control of teeth movement to a new level.

3. Clear Braces

Clear braces work in precisely the same way as traditional metal braces and produce the same results, but are aimed at patients needing aesthetically pleasing orthodontic treatment.

Clear braces are either tooth-coloured or completely clear, producing both aesthetically pleasing and efficient braces. They can be used with tooth-coloured wires to make them even less visible.

6. Orthodontic Implant Anchorage (TAD)

Moving teeth in a certain direction always generates movement of other teeth in the opposite direction, and conventional methods don’t guarantee absolute anchorage, causing undesirable movements that slow down treatment. Our surgery uses orthodontic implants (also called TADs) – the latest technology in orthodontics that provides extraordinary control in both routine and complex cases. These small implants offer absolute anchorage, making treatment more efficient and personalised to suit individual needs. They can create or close spaces in suitable cases, often minimising the need for tooth extractions. Our surgery has over 19 years of experience in using orthodontic implants, and Dr Ho has inserted nearly a thousand orthodontic implants since 2004.

7. Functional Appliances

There is a wide range of functional appliances to correct bite problems and facial imbalances. Although functional appliances are mainly used in patients who are still growing, some adults may have similar cellular and biological responses to the appliances. Our clinic utilises functional appliances such as expanders and twin blocks for young patients. A modified approach is designed to achieve an effective outcome for adult patients with less discomfort. Customised designs, such as Shark Fin Twin Block, are specifically developed to treat different facial patterns.

8. Adult Functional Appliances

There is a wide range of functional appliances to correct bite problems and facial imbalance. One of the most common facial disharmonies treated by orthodontists is the protrusion of the upper jaw beyond the lower jaw, giving rise to an appearance of an overbite. Fixed functional appliances are used to modify and stimulate jaw growth, movement of teeth and dental arches. Although functional appliances are mainly used in patients who are still growing, the cellular and biological responses in adults to the appliances are essentially the same. Our clinic utilises a modified approach to achieve an effective outcome for the adult patient with less discomfort.

9. Fixed Expanders (conventional and implant supported)

Arch expansion with a fixed expander is one of many ways to treat orthodontic problems. Arch expansion means increasing the arch width. Benefits of arch expansion include space creation, improved arch coordination, better oral function, and enhanced airway. However, arch expansion does have its side effects. Indiscriminate use of arch expanders to resolve dental crowding may cause irreversible complications. Diagnosis remains the key to good treatment planning.

10. Sleep Apnoea Appliances

Sleep apnoea can occur in both children and adults. Our clinic provides anti-snoring, mandibular repositioning devices to improve sleep quality. Studies in Australia show that more than two-thirds of patients suffering from sleep apnoea benefit from anti-snoring devices. Our devices are individually customised to achieve maximum comfort and effectiveness. Surgical options can be considered in severe cases.

11. Surgical Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment with jaw surgery helps to correct severe facial imbalance and improve overall quality of life. Advances in surgical techniques in recent years, such as Surgery First, 3D AI modelling, and customised rigid fixation bone plates, not only enhance surgical planning and results but also improve predictability and recovery of the procedures. Our clinic utilises state-of-the-art 3D facial scanning, combined with 3D x-rays and 3D dental scanning, to create a true 3D facial model for better planning and outcomes.
